Redditch
Special

Our
first
winner
this
evening
has
devoted
her
life
to
helping
people
with
special
needs
achieve
sporting
glory.
More
than
20
years
ago
she
was
inspired
to
set
up
Special
Olympics
Redditch
in
response
to
the
lack
of
after
school
activities
or
community
support
for
children
and
adults
with
special
needs.
Over
the
years
she
has
operated
as
both
secretary
and
coach
running
training
sessions
and
raising
more
than
£250,000
to
support
the
work
of
the
group.
Many
of
those
she
has
helped
have
gone
on
to
compete
at
local,
national
and
international
events.
As
a
counsellor,
mentor
and
positive
role
model
she
has
allowed
those
who
may
be
less
fortunate
the
opportunity
to
be
socially
included,
take
part
in
sport
and
be
treated
equally.

Our
next
winner
has
been
described
as
a
man
who
is
ingrained
with
a
desire
to
'do
the
right
thing'.
He
has
a
lengthy
list
of
achievements
that
include
working
with
Redditch
YMCA
to
establish
a
range
of
sporting
and
social
activities
as
well
as
walkathons
and
venturing
out
into
the
night
to
support
people
in
crisis.
He
more
recently
worked
with
vulnerable
young
people
and
now
is
part
of
the
county
council's
adult
services,
commissioning
support
services
for
prisoners.
But
his
commitment
to
those
less
fortunate
extends
far
beyond
his
working
life.
Together
with
his
wife
Janice
they
care
for
his
mother-in-law
who
has
serious
dementia
and
also
adopted
two
boys
in
1999
Luke,
who
is
blind
in
one
eye
and
has
tunnel
vision
in
the
other,
and
Marley
who
has
cerebral
palsy
and
uncontrolled
epilepsy.
With
his
support
–
which
included
becoming
International
Secretary
of
the
Blind
Cricket
Organisation
-
Luke
has
gone
on
to
play
for
the
England
Blind
Cricket
team
and
has
recently
graduated
with
a
HND
in
business,
while
Marley
has
finished
full-time
education
and
our
nominee
and
Janice
are
now
developing
a
weekly
timetable
of
activities
to
ensure
Marley
has
a
full
and
active
life.
These
examples
give
just
a
flavour
of
this
man's
contribution
to
the
borough,
and
I
am
delighted
to
declare

his

For
the

three
years
this
man
has
devoted
a
large
part
of
his

to

Last

We

as

he

95

of
the

who
currently
give
birth
at
the

will
still
have
the

It
is
worth
noting
he
has
done
all
this
despite
publicly
and
privately
being
criticised
for
putting

at

by
delaying
the

Next
up
is
a
young
man
who
in
just
two
years
has
become
an
integral
part
of
the
community
in
Winyates,
giving
freely
of
his
time
to
go
above
and
beyond
what
is
required
in
his

His
patience
with
those

willingness

commented
on

as
is
his

to
some

he
works
with.
He
is
a
school
governor
at
Roman

and
after
one
year
in
the

has
now
been
elected
chair.
He
is
also
an
incredible
supporter
of
Redditch
Foodbank
–
helping
to
train
volunteers,
delivering
food
parcels
–
including
out

even
around
Christmas

–
and
raised
more
than
£400
by
cycling
100

plus
around
Worcestershire's
food
banks
for
the
cause.
He
has
also
cycled
from
Redditch
to
Paris
to
raise
money
for
Whizzkids,
using
his
own
annual
leave
to
make
the
trip.
Next
on
the
agenda
is
the
creation
of
a
local
credit
union
and
school
bank
to
help
those
in
financial
need
and
he
also
gives
up
his

to
gain
his

allowing
him
to

new

to
help
support
those

This

is
'Well

That's

Although
she
is
now
over
90
years
of
age,
our
next
winner
continues
to
make
a
valuable
contribution
to
the
life
of
the
borough.
She
has
been
on
the
committee
of
Redditch
Blind
Association
for
at
least
the
best
part
of
three
decades
and
ran
the
fortnightly
luncheon
club
for
the
blind
and
partially
sighted
for
the
same
period
of
time
before
retiring
last
December,
but
continues
to
visit
prospective
new
members
to
see
if
they
would
benefit
from
attending.
Three
times
a
year
she
helps
fund
raise
by
standing
outside
supermarkets
with
a
collection
tin,
and
continues
to
visit
blind
people
to
see
how
they
can
be
helped
and
reports
back
to
the
committee.
She
helps
supply
and
prepare
the
food
for
up
to
100
members
at
the
annual
Christmas
party
and
visits
visually
impaired
people
who
cannot
attend
to
ensure
they
get
their
winter
expenses
grant.
On
top
of
all
this
she
has
been
involved
with
Redditch
Talking
Newspaper
for
almost
30
years
and
continues
to
read
for
them
once
a
month.
Over
the
years
she
has
been

helping
to
gather
news
items,
contributing
pieces
herself
and
helping
embrace
new
technology
as
it
has
emerged
over

As
well
as
all
this
she
finds
time
to
support
a

She's
an

ages

OUR
next
winner's
years
of
dedication
to
Redditch
began
shortly
after
moving
to
the
town
in
1969
when
she
joined
the
Woodrow
Residents'
Association.
Over
the
years
she
has
been
involved
with
a
number
of
voluntary
organisations
including
eight
years
as
a
case
worker
for
the
Soldiers,
Sailors,
Airmen
and
Families
Association
and
since
2002
has
been

She
is
an
integral
part

work
in
championing
issues
for
older
residents,
as
well
as
helping
to
organise
the
social
side
of
their
activities.
She
was
instrumental
in
securing
free
gym
equipment
in
Arrow

Park,
which
is
well
used
by
older
people,
who
meet

she
leads
twice
weekly

which
helps
develop
the
fitness
of
the
20
or
so
older
people
who
attend.
And
when
she
has
time
she
raises
money
for
the
blind
and
the
League
of
Friends
at
the
Alexandra

Although
well
into
her
80s
she
tells
people
she
is
putting
off
getting
old
until
older
people's

have
improved
sufficiently

so
she
is
far

This
group
in
particular
defy
the
stereotype
attached
to
their
sector.
After
hearing
of
a
group
of
veterans
desperately
trying
to
raise
£10,000
so
they
could
visit
Arnhem
to
pay
tribute
to
their
fallen
comrades
lost
during
the
Second
World
War
they
decided
to
help.
It
initially
appeared
to
be
a
huge
mountain
to
climb
but
they
not
only
met
the
target
but
they
smashed
it
through
a
determined
series
of
fund-raising
events.
These
included
enlisting
staff
and
customers
to
walk
the
distance
from
Redditch
to
the
site
of
the
D
Day
landings
in
Normandy
on
a
treadmill
–
some
255
miles,
cycling
from
Redditch
to
Arnhem
in
three
days,
quizzes
and
other
smaller
events.
Another
£2,500
was
raised
through
the
creation
of
a
special
pin
badge
designed
by
a
member
of
staff
to
mark
the
70th
anniversary
of
Operation
Market
Garden.
In
just
20
weeks
they
raised
more
than
£17,000
which
not
only
allowed
up
to
20
veterans
and
their

to
pay,
what
will

WHEN
faced
with
a
tragedy,
particularly
one
involving
the
loss
of
a
child,
the
easiest
thing
to
do
would
be
to
allow
grief
to
consume
you
and
shut
yourself
off
from
the
world.
It
takes
immense
bravery
and
courage
to
stand

hope
of
stopping
it
happening

that
this

workshops
took

raise
awareness
of
the
dangers
of
open

In
addition
they
have
raised
£1,000
to
fund
their
work
through
a
Prom

staged
at
a

as
Richard
did
not
get
to
attend

They

parents
to
be
close
by
her
at
all
times,
but
emotional
support
from
staff
at
the
Ronald
McDonald
House
situated
at
the
back
of
Birmingham
Children's
Hospital
where
Lucie
was
so
expertly
cared
for.
Despite
being
devastated
by
their
loss,
supported
by
friends
and
family,
they
have
set
about
to
ensure
the
service
offered
by
the
house
continues
to
be
available
to
other
families
in
similar
situations.
They
have
held,
raffles,
auctions,
a
darts
night
and
they
have
even
organised
a
bungee
jump
and
convinced
Redditch's
MP
to
get
involved.
So
far
their
efforts
have
raised
more
than
£40,000
which
has
funded
two
bedrooms
within
the
house
for
three
years,
which
is
crucial
given
the
house
relies
solely
on
donations.Some
of
the
money
has
also
been
donated
to
help
refurbish
Ward
15
within
the
children's
hospital,
the
paediatric
intensive
care
unit,
and
CLIC
Sargent
which
is
a
charity
that
provides
financial
and
emotional
support
to
help
young
people
and
their
families
with
cancer
and
The
Willows
Hedgehog
Sanctuary
in
Bromsgrove.
And
on
Sunday,
December
21
they
will
deliver
£3,000
worth
of
iPad,
craft
sets
and
ITunes
vouchers
for
the
children's
hospital
with
money
left
over
from
their
2014
calendar.
I
know
they
have
mixed
emotions
about
accepting
this
award,
they
would
all
rather
the
outcome
had
been
very
different,
but
I
am
sure
Lucie
would
be
so
proud
of
the
work
they
are
doing
in
her
name.
Ladies
and
gentlemen
it
is
my
privilege
to
declare
